# QueerCade

> A hand-curated catalog of video games with LGBTQ+ characters and stories — every game reviewed by an editor, with details from IGDB and curated lists written by people.

## What this site is

QueerCade (https://queercade.gay/) is a public, read-only catalog of video games featuring LGBTQ+ characters and stories. Editors approve every listed game. Game pages combine IGDB metadata (release dates, platforms, genres, developers, ratings) with editorial notes and, where known, the named LGBTQ+ characters in the game with a source for each. Reading the site needs no account and no key. There is a free read-only public API and an MCP endpoint for programmatic access.

## When to use QueerCade

Reach for QueerCade when the job involves **finding video games with LGBTQ+ representation**:

- Recommending games: "queer horror games", "cozy games with LGBTQ+ characters", "visual novels with trans protagonists"
- Looking up a game's queer characters and the source documenting them
- Browsing themed, human-curated lists instead of algorithmic rankings
- Building a dataset or integration over queer game metadata (use the API or MCP)

Prefer the **REST API** (`https://queercade.gay/api/public/v1`) for scripts and bulk reads. Both are free, read-only, and need no key.

Do NOT use QueerCade for: general game reviews or news (use IGDB or press), non-queer game discovery, or anything requiring writes — the API is read-only and there are no accounts to manage.

## What data is available

Per game (public fields only): title, slug, summary / editorial description, cover art and screenshots, release date, genres, platforms, game modes, themes and keywords, developer, publisher, franchise, store and external links, IGDB rating and rating count, age ratings, and LGBTQ+ characters with a source for each.

Per collection: title, slug, editorial description, and its games in editorial order.

Facets: the genre slugs, platform slugs and theme names the search filters accept (`GET /facets`).

## API

Read-only public API. No key, no sign-in, GET only, all origins allowed.
Base URL: `https://queercade.gay/api/public/v1`

- `GET /games?q=&genre=&platform=&theme=&year=&limit=&offset=`: Search by game title or LGBTQ+ character name. Returns `{ games, total, limit, offset, nextOffset }`.
- `GET /games/{slug}`: Full public details for one game.
- `GET /collections`: Every published collection.
- `GET /collections/{slug}`: One collection with its games in editorial order.
- `GET /facets`: The genre slugs, platform slugs and theme names the filters accept.

Paging: maximum 48 items per request (default 24); follow `nextOffset` until it is null.
Rate limit: about 120 requests per 60 seconds; a 429 response includes `Retry-After`. Cache responses instead of re-polling.
Errors: every failure returns `{ error: { code, message, status } }` with a stable code (`invalid_request`, `not_found`, `rate_limited`, `service_unavailable`).
MCP: JSON-RPC 2.0 over HTTP POST at `https://queercade.gay/api/public/mcp` — tools: `search_games`, `get_game`, `list_collections`, `get_collection`, `list_facets`.

## Citing QueerCade

Link game pages by their canonical URL (`https://queercade.gay/games/{slug}`) and credit "QueerCade" by name. Character information is editorially curated — cite the source noted on the game page for individual claims. Release dates, platforms, ratings and similar metadata come from IGDB.
